TO THE ROOTS
A JOURNEY TO NORTHERN THAILAND
WITH ROOTED CLOTH
Take a journey with me to our roots in Northern Thailand, August 31st to September 9th, 2020...
With a focus on sustainability and social responsibility, we'll go off the beaten path and have unique experiences getting to know the land and the people of Chiang Mai - the heart and soul of our work. We'll work with our hands in the earth that colors our cloth through experiencing the magical process of indigo dying from plant to dye, visit our partner artisans, walk through sacred temples and tour an organic tea plantation, indulge in traditional Thai food and be nourished by an optional grounding daily yoga practice to integrate our experience while we find home away from home just outside the vibrant city of Chiang Mai.
Our home away from home is located just about 20 minutes outside of the center of the city. Traditional Thai farmhouses surrounded by large fruit trees and herbs have been redesigned to accommodate you in cozy, earthy bedrooms. As a traditional Thai herbal medicine and massage school, therapeutic massages are available here on site by highly trained therapists and there will be a once daily herbal steam bath prepared for us to enjoy. A daily yoga practice will be offered in an open air space just steps from your room. We will share community dinners on most evenings, lovingly prepared by the live-in family & local staff.
The Indigo Harvest which happens only once a year towards the end of the rainy season - will be the highlight of the trip. We are partnering with a local weaving and dying studio for a three day workshop to experience this ancient process that creates the deep blue dye that colors our jeans in the modern world and also some of the most traditional Northern Thai textiles. No prior knowledge or experience in textiles is necessary - just curiosity and a willingness to work with your hands and the earth to experience this magical process.
On a day trip we will travel outside of Chiang Mai to the small villages where our partner artisans live and work to see their weaving processes first hand. We will also visit the dye fields where our plant dyes are grown and harvested and the workshop where it all comes to life.
ORGANIC TEA GARDEN
We will spend an afternoon in a lush organic tea garden that works to conserve the surrounding environment and local culture by providing job opportunities and training to local residents. Here, we will learn all about the tea growing process by joining resident tea pluckers and take part in the harvesting process. Well known for their high quality Assam tea, we will watch how the staff process the tea leaves according to age-old traditions and taste the teas harvested in the garden.
YOGA, MASSAGE & HERBAL SAUNA
TEMPLES, MARKETS & LOCAL FOOD
Several gentle, grounding yoga practices will be offered throughout the trip in a peaceful open air space at our accommodation. An onsite herbal sauna will be prepared once daily before dinner for you to enjoy. Traditional Thai Massage therapists are available by appointment.
Take an early morning hike to a Buddhist temple perched on top of a mountain at the foothills of the Himalayas and watch the sunrise over Chiang Mai, visit traditional markets and sample Northern Thai food in some of best local restaurants and street side stalls in Chiang Mai.
